Text-Song Festival, 27/5/06

In the framework of the sixtieth anniversary of Unesco, and aiming at paying reverence to cultural diversity, which nurtures human capacities and values, also targeting to enhance Euro-Arab dialogue through different channels, among which poetry and music, the Lebanese National Commission for Unesco organized a crossnational text-song festival in Lebanon, the country of diversity, democracy and liberty.
The festival brought together poets/singers from countries on both sides of the Mediterranean: Egypt, France, Greece, Italy, Lebanon, Palestine, Spain and Syria, in order for them to express, in their own ways, their respect for, and belief in, values that are embedded in cultural diversity, in particular the right to be different and the right for liberty and freedom of expression. The festival also served as a platform for the performers to consolidate the Euro-Arab links through exchange of experiences in both writing and singing, where they have a lot to share.
The festival was concluded by a final song which was composed of some extracts from the participants original texts after having them translated into arabic of the foreign texts.
The Danish Delegation to ASP schools in Lebanon 22-27/10/2005

A danish delegation composed of 28 teachers visited 9 lebanese associated schools : Rawda High School, Rafic Hariri High School-Sidon, Sidon Public School for girls, Al-Ahliah School, Sagesse High School-Ain Saadeh, Deutsche Schule-Jounieh, Zahrat Al-Ihsan, Bchamoun Public School, St. Georges-Hadeth . A program was organized for the delegation which comprised a tour in the respective schools with actual classes attendance to learn more on methods of teaching. Meeting with the directors and coordinators of the schools was also arranged to discuss the necessary measures for twinning danish and lebanese schools .
The UNESCO Director General, Mr. Koichiro Matsuura, visit to the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO 27/4/2006

In the framework of UNESCO 60 years anniversary and on the occasion of Mr. Matsuura's visit to Lebanon to launch the National Council for Scientific Research program of science and technology innovative policy, the Director General paid a visit to the premises of the Lebanese National Commission offices where he held a press conference to give a brief statement about his visit to Lebanon . Present were the Minister of Culture, Dr. Tarek Mitri and the Secretary General, the members and staff of the Lebanese National Commission.Also presents were members of the official delegation mainly the ADG, Mr. Ahmed Sayyad and the Director of the UNESCO Beirut Office. The Director General commended with appreciation the distinguish role that the Lebanese National Commission assures and which has placed it among the leading Natcoms of UNESCO .

Celebrating EFA week Each child needs a teacher 28/04/2006

In the framework of UNESCO 60 years anniversary and EFA week, and in cooperation with the UNESCO Office in Beirut and under the patronage of H.E. the deputy Mrs. Bahia Al-Hariri, president of the parliamentarian committee of education, a ceremony was organized to distribute awards to the 6 winners in the contest of Best expressional phrases. The selected phrases reflected best the slogan of the EFA week Each child needs a teacher . 71 students participated in the contest and the individual awards were encyclopedias, books and Cdroms in three languages . All the winning expressions figured in the EFA poster
The National Commission celebrates World philosophy day
The Lebanese National Commission celebrates the world philosophy day by organizing a seminar on “Philosophy and Sufism” , under the patronage of minister of culture Mr. Tarek Mitri. The seminar will be held on November 16th,2006 at 3 p.m. at the Bristol Hotel.
The seminar comprises two themes, the first, “thinking and life”, to be tackled by Mr. Waddah Nasr, Mr. Saad Hakim, Mr.Victor Al Kik and moderated by Mr. Radwan Al Saeyd. The second, “accepting the other”, to be tackled by Mr. Gérard Jihami, Mr. Sami Makarem, Mr. Adib Saab and moderated by Archbishop Georges Khodr.
An overall synthesis will be given by Cheikh Chafik Jaradi.
The National Commission’s delegation participates in the 34th Unesco General Conference:
The Lebanese delegation participated in the 34th Unesco General Conference that took place at Unesco Headquarters in Paris from October 16th till November, 2nd,2007. The delegation was lead by the Minister of Culture, Dr. Tarek Mitri and composed by the president of the Parliamentarian Committee for Education Mrs. Bahia Harriri, the Lebanese Permanent Delegate to Unesco Ambassador Sylvie Fadlallah, the Secretary General of the Lebanese National Commission Mrs. Salwa Saniora Baassiri, the Vice-President of the National Commission Dr. Khalil Karam, the Executive Committee member Dr. Hareth Boustani, the Lebanese representative at the Executive Bureau Mrs. Samira Daher, the Director of the Lebanese Council for Scientific Research Dr. Georges Tohme, and the Director General of Education Mr. Fadi Yarak.
Dr. Tarek Mitri spoke during the General Conference on behalf of Lebanon, while Mrs. Bahia Harriri participated in the Civil Society Forum. Mrs. Salwa Saniora Baassiri chaired the General Questions, Programme Support and External Relations (PXR) Commission and participated in several meetings upon which the meetings of the Social and Human Sciences Commission and the Civil Society Forum. During the final meetings of the General Committee of the 34th conference, she presented the final report of the PXR commission and was warmly congratulated by member states and Unesco.
The Director General for Education represented the Lebanese Minister of Education during the round table on “education and development”, as Dr. Georges Tohmé participated in a scientific debate on “science and technology for sustainable development: the role of Unesco”. Dr. Karam participated in the Communication and Information Commission and Dr. Boustani in the Culture Commission.
The Lebanese participation was effective and fruitful during the General Conference.
Interpersonal Conflict Resolution Training sessions for ASPnet teachers and students and for UNESCO Clubs members
March,7-8 and April 11-12 and May 2nd, 2008
The Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO organized three training sessions on interpersonal conflict resolution. The first one for ASPnet teachers, the second one for ASPnet students, the third one for UNESCO Clubs members.
The sessions tackled the following subthemes: understanding conflict; communication in conflict management; introduction to negotiation; problem solving techniques; the stage of interpersonal problem solving.
51 participants,students, teachers and UNESCO clubs members attended the training sessions.
The training sessions helped the participants to acquire interpersonal conflict resolution skills, also served in ice breaking between teachers and students coming from different backgrounds, in having them learn to work together in a dynamic way, accept each others’ opinions and find solutions based on common interest. The training sessions were completed by follow up sessions where they presented their experiences using the skills acquired in resolving conflicts at different levels, family, professionnally, between friends. This follow up were characterized by a role play between teachers and students on negociation technique. At the end of these training sessions, certificates were distributed to the participants by the Secretary General, Mrs. Salwa Saniora Baassiri.




UNESCO Clubs Quiz Night
On June 18th, the final round of the UNESCO Quiz Night competition was hosted by the Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO .
The competitors were the finalists of the rounds that were organized separately by both AUB UNESCO Club and LAU UNESCO Club.
The questions of the Quiz night were mainly around UN, UNESCO, the Lebanese National Commission and the UNESCO Clubs in Lebanon.
The AUB UNESCO Club team was the one to win the competition and to receive the prize of the Quiz Night.
